With nearly 130,000 residents, Sassari is one of the largest cities on the island of Sardinia. It is widely thought that the city was founded by coastal populations fleeing pirate attacks in the Middle Ages. The oldest University on the island is found here, dating back to the mid-16th century. Found just inland from the north-western coast, there are 32km of coastline that is considered part of the modern city, including famous beaches such as the very relaxed Platamona Beach.
