Gallinara Island, or L’Isola Gallinara, is one of the most well known sights of Albenga; this large island, which has a surface area of about 11 hectares, is situated roughly about one mile off the coat of the mainland and is now classified as a Regional Natural Reserve. There are rare reptiles, a unique avian population and a particular community of vegetation that characterize the island and render it important from a biological and ecological standpoint. It is not without its cultural significance, though, as a wide variety of archeological artifacts have been found on the seafloor immediately surrounding the island; this material ranges in age from the 5th century BC to modern times.

The island is also known as the “Island of the Saints”, as a number of saints have taken refuge here for one reason or another. The island itself has been “used” since ancient times and evidence points to the fact that humans have temporarily inhabited the island since at least the 4th century BC. The middle ages, then, most likely saw the establishment of some kind of monastic community on the island, originally of the Benedictine order. After this, the island was used as a defense post to protect against coastal attacks and many ships used the island as cover; indeed, in the 1500s, a lookout tower was built here. Today, tourists enjoy diving and fishing in the waters around the island.
