This town in the province of Liguria has a rich history, starting with the Roman era. The town once sat on the Via Julia Augusta, and two of this ancient road’s bridges still stand. The famous Savoy family ruled the town starting in 1735, and built several public monuments including the current town hall, the Palazzo Doria. This structure is a beautiful example of Renaissance architecture. Be sure to see the mosaic tile floor, dating from the 3rd century AD, on the 2nd floor of the building. The palace is connected to the tower, shaped like a pentagon, which was built in 1602 in order to house the town’s military. The church of San Giovanni Battista was built in the 17th century, and features a unique ten-sided form. Inside are a number of important paintings by artists such as Borgione and Coppellino. The church of Sant’Agostino has lovely pink Finale stone columns, and great statues by M. Sparzo.
