Abbadia San Salvatore is a town located in the province of Siena, in the Northern Italian region of Tuscany. Found on the eastern slope of Mount Amiata, Italy’s second largest volcano, it was originally part of a monastic fief and became an independent town around the 1700s. Considered one of the most well preserved medieval villages in all of Tuscany, its historical origins can be seen throughout the town. Besides simply walking through the medieval streets, stop by the Abbazia di San Salvatore, the Benedictine abbey around which the original fief arose, constructed in 762.

The town’s history is also evident in the celebrations hosted throughout the year. Two of the most characteristic celebrations are the Medieval Feast and the Fiaccole della Notte di Natale. The former is characterized by locals parading around in medieval costumes and re-enacting scenes from the Middle Ages while the latter is an impressive display of bonfires on Christmas Eve. Finally, if you’re more of a nature person, check out the numerous hiking trails around Mount Amiata. If you’re looking for a characteristic Tuscan town to enjoy for a weekend, Abbadia San Salvatore may be the place for you.
