Tourists who are in Asciano in the middle of September should check out the Palio dei Ciuchi. This has become one of the most famous Asciano attractions due to its folkloristic appeal. The main event of the Palio, a contest which sees the various districts of the town pitted against one another, involves a race around a track on donkeys. It was initially born as somewhat of a mockery of the much larger Palio of Siena, very well known around the world, but then developed into its own town festival.
As its importance grew, so did the amount of celebrating. To the donkey race, indeed, was added an impressive historical parade, with locals dressed in typical medieval costume. The parade winds through the historical center of town and ends up in front of the stadium, where the race will be held. During the parade, some of the locals show their skills in flag throwing displays and street performances. There are also celebratory dinners, complete with local dishes and wine, and musical performances.
