The Tuscan city of Siena is a popular vacation spot. It sits on three hills, its center the Piazza del Campo with its 13th and 14th century architecture. The Palazzo Publica is pure Italian Gothic and the symbol of the power of former rulers. Be sure to include the Fonte Gaia, the S. Francesco Basilica and the Duomo. The Duomo is an excellent example of medieval Italian architecture combining Gothic with some Romanesque elements. The façade is by Giovanni Pisano.
Siena offers a visitor much from which to choose. From anywhere in the city, you can reach the various attractions including the Museo Civico, the 16th century Palazzo del Governatore dei Medici, currently the Provincial Government building, the Baptisterio dedicated to St John the Baptist with its 15th century hexagonal font and the Basilica dei Servi started in the 13th century by the Servites. Inside there are 13th and 14th century works, including the Madonna “del Bordone.”
