    Sondrio Details

The province of Sondrio is located in the northern Italian region of Lombardy, or Lombardia in Italian; the northwestern part of the province borders Switzerland. The province was originally inhabited by Celtic tribes and then by the Romans. The area is mountainous, thanks to the Alps, and many tourists who enjoy hiking, mountain biking and other outdoor activities are attracted to the area. The capital city of the province, also called Sondrio, has an important historical center, with a castle dating to the 13th century. Head out of the capital to visit the other characteristic towns of the province, such as Livigno. Attractions here include a multitude of winter sports, including some of the best skiing in Italy. Indeed, the district of Trepalle, at an altitude of 2250 meters above sea level, is the highest inhabited area in the country and one of Italys coldest towns.
