The imposing Rocca di Narni, or Narni fortress, is part of the system of fortresses put in place by the Papacy during the middle ages. Its position, overlooking the entire city, and its particular construction characteristics, demonstrate the Papacy’s desire for territorial control through control of the roads that lead to Perugia, Ternia and the nearby town of Amelia. The fortress has a square layout, with its corners fortified by the presence of four towers. It is surrounded by a moat and a second line of defensive walls. The walls and the towers enclose a courtyard that is accessed via two elegant doorways.

The first floor of the actual castle was occupied by the royal inhabitants of the fort, while the chapel was located on the ground floor. Work on the fortress was begun in 1367, over the remains of an original military structure constructed by Frederick Barbarossa of Hohenstaufen, and was finished in 1378. Between the years 1370 and 1449, the structure was home to popes, cardinals and condottieri. Pope Nicholas V took refuge in the fort when the plague ravaged the area. During the 19th century, it became a jail and now it belongs to the town. It has undergone renovations and is one of the most popular Attigliano attractions.
