Àlcamo is a town in the province of Trapani, in the northwestern part of the island of Sicily. The town’s origins date far back in time, to around the year 828. The first significant colonists were Arabs, though they were subsequently chased away and replaced by Christians. Indeed, though some remnants of Arab culture can still be seen, the town is highly Christianized. The rich history that characterizes Àlcamo is evident in its numerous monuments. For example, all tourists should visit the Castello dei Conti di Modica, built in 1350, and which now houses the Tourist Information Center. You should also stop by the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta, built in 1332, and the Chiesa del Santissimo Salvatore, a church that was built before the year 1300.
