The Sanctuary of the Madonna of Miracles, or il Santuario della Madonna dei Miracoli, is one of the most important religious sights in Alcamo. The sanctuary was designed around the middle of the 16th century by the artist Girolamo Vicchiuzzo, from Palermo; it was then expanded and it acquired its current aspect at the beginning of the 1700s. Indeed, the church’s architectural style is a mix of Renaissance and Baroque; actually, for the high number of angels, drapes and flowery ornaments, it has been considered a classic example of Sicilian Baroque.

The façade possesses two large doors with ribbed columns, topped by Corinthian capitals, a platform window located between another two windows, cut by the artist Innocenzo Arcodaci. An impressive limestone bell tower is located adjacent to the façade. The cover is supported by four large stone ribs, interspersed with bricks of various colors. The inside of the church is decorated with stuccoes by the artist Nicolò Curti; you can also find a basin for holy water that dates to the 1600s, a sarcophagus for Captain Fernando Vega, which dates to the middle of the 1500s, and some interesting paintings by Patania and Fra’ Felice da Sambuca. The painting of the Madonna dei Miracoli, finally, has incredible historical importance, as does the Chapel of the Sanctuary (La Cappella del Santuario), where the painting is housed.
