Known as “The Pearl of Treviso,” the town of Asolo is found in the Veneto region in the Treviso province. The town is also called “The City of a Hundred Horizons” because of its mountain setting and all the gorgeous views possible from the city’s position. The town started as Acelum, a Roman settlement, and by the Middle Ages it belonged to the Ezzelino family. In 1489, the former queen of Cyprus, Caterina Cornaro was granted permanent possession of the city and built a personal theater there. However, war broke that hold 20 years later. Her theater was later purchased, shipped to Sarasota Florida and completely reassembled by Ringling of the circus brothers fame.
Caterina’s castle is still in town, and now has the Eleonora Duse theater. Roman remains in the town include the Villa Freya amphitheater, and part of an aqueduct. The Rocca Castle dates from the late 12th to early 13th century. Also see the town’s museum in at the Palazzo della Ragione, as well as the town’s cathedral built in 1747.
