The province of Varese is located in the northern Italian region of Lombardy. Found at the foot of the Alps, it is mainly composed of mountains and hills, though there is a plain area in the southern part of the province. There are a number of lakes, some of which are glacial in origin; indeed, the province is known as the “Zone of the Seven Lakes”. Many tourists are attracted to the natural beauty of the area, though visitors also appreciate the wealth of historical and artistic sights that the province offers. Indeed, Varese is one of the provinces that house a Sacro Monte, a series of chapels that represent some religious sequence of events; these chapels are found throughout the northern regions of Piedmont and Lombardy. These chapels have been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you’re looking for some more history, head to the town of Vergiate; attractions here include the Church of San Gallo, constructed before the year 1000, the Church of San Martino, with a 16th century altar, and the remains of a number of medieval towers.
