If you’re looking for things to do in Azzate that are the object of legend, then you shouldn’t miss a trip to the Chiesa della Madonnina del Lago, or the Church of the Small Virgin of the Lake. Indeed, according to legend, the noble knight, Niero delle Rose, upon his return from the Crusades, galloped his way through the lands around Azzate to reach his golden-haired bride. It was winter, and all around him there was darkness and snow. At a certain point, he reached a clearing that seemed to be a vast prairie completely covered with snow. The noble knight did not hesitate and continued galloping until he saw a collection of houses, where he searched for someone who would give him something warm to reinvigorate him for the last part of his journey.

A farmer from Azzate, upon hearing the knight’s tale, informed the knight that he miraculously avoided death in crossing what the knight considered a “prairie”. The prairie was in fact the surface of a large, frozen lake, which should have given way under the weight of the knight and his steed. When he heard about his close brush with death, the knight became pale and left the farmer with a bag of money to erect a chapel in honor of the Madonna, who saw him safely across the lake. The chapel, according to legend, was constructed sometime in the late 14th or early 15th century, but renovated in 1894 and 1904.
