Chioggia is an island community near the southern end of the Venice lagoon, about 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) from Venice by water and 50 Kilometers (31 miles) by road. It was once a major salt producer, but today it is a fishing port. It dates back to the days of the Byzantine Empire. This is a wonderful place to come for a vacation, or even to spend a weekend. Chioggia has been called Little Venice because of its canals. The maim thoroughfare, Corso de Popolo, is lined with cafes and shops.
