The Goldoni Theatre began life under the names Teatro Vendramin, San Salvador and San Lucia. This 17th century structure was unpretentious. During the early 17th century, a fire and other problems resulted in restorations. Others were to follow. The most significant took place in the 17th and 18th centuries. They included interior work by the set designer Giuseppe Borsotta and Bagnara. One of the significant changes was in name.
In the mid 1700s, a nobleman, Francesco Vendramin bought the theatre. He enticed the famous playwright, Carlo Goldoni (1707-1793) to work for him. It was a major feather in his cap. Eventually, the theatre came to bear the name of Goldoni. It was done so in 1875 with the full consent of Vendramin’s widow. Since then, the Theatre has focused on his works, they are performed annually. Yet, the 800 seat theater also presents Junior Theatre, opera, concerts and ballets.
