There is a reason for the unusual name of this church. The actual name is Santa Maria della Consolazione. It is known locally and commonly, however, as the Church of Santa Maria della Fava. This translates as Saint Mary of the Bean. Tales abound as to its origins: one says it is the result of a prominent family named Fava. Another says it refers to the special cakes or cookies (beans) baked by a local baker and eaten on All Soul’s Day (November 1) here. The Church of Santa Maria della Fava is an 18th century edifice. It features a few prominent art works. On the first altar to the right of the entrance is the Education of the Virgin by Giambattista Tiepolo. This an excellent study of light and color. The Madonna and child by Giambattista Piazzetta on the left is more comber and severe. Of particular interest are the niche statues by Torretto the Master of Canova (1694-1774). Yet, some people book a space in budget hotels convenient to the Church of Santa Maria della Fava in Venice. They do so to see the miracle working Madonna. It once was part of the wall of the Ca’ Dolce.
