The Church of Maddalena (La Maddalena) dates back to the early 13th century. In 1222, the Balbo family owned it. The Church of the Maddalena remained small until the mid 14th century. The Venetian officials decided to declare a public holiday in honor of the feast of Mary Magdalene. As a result, the church was enlarged. The simple square watchtower became a large bell tower. The tower increased in height further in 1701. It was removed in 1888.

In the early 18th century a decision was made to restore the church. This proved futile: the entire church was rebuilt between 1763 and 1778. Tommaso Temanza redesigned the Church of the Maddalena according to the Neo-classical principles of the time. He chose the Parthenon in Rome as his model. He placed a hexagonal plan beneath a circular plan. In doing so, he created the only circular religious building in Venice. It is one reason to check for a hotel in Venice close to the Church of the Maddalena. Wander through the interior. You may catch a contemporary installation. There are also art exhibits held here. Alternatively, you can enjoy the paintings within the church. Hanging in the 4 side altars are works by Tiepolo.
