Santa Maria del Miracoli Church is popular among Venetians for nuptial ceremonies. It is easy to see why. This church is exquisite in its design and the rendering in its materials. Petro Lombardo is responsible for the architecture. He is said to have used marble left over from the Basilica di San Marco. Whether this is true or not, Marco’s loss is Maria’s gain. The façade is comprised of various hues of marble and covered with fine sculptures and bas reliefs. There is little wonder why some refer to this church as a “jewel box.”

The church initially had a purpose. It was built to contain the miraculous painting by Nicolò di Pietro - The Virgin and Child (1408).This wonder working art piece now hangs above the altar. Yet, it is not the only reason to stay in a charming budget hotel in Venice near the Santa maria del Miracoli. The interior is lush with grey, pink and white marble decorations. The barrel vaulting enhances the design. It is also an ideal setting for the 50 portraits of saints and prophets. The Balustrade that is between the nave and the chancel features figures of St. Francis, Archangel Gabriel, the Virgin and St. Clare by Tullio Lombardo. Lombardo is also responsible for the screen behind the altar. Pietro and Tullio Lombardo collaborated on the choir stalls.
