Occupying a good portion of Santa Maria Formosa Campo is the Church of the same name. Santa Maria Formosa Church is an unusual construction. It features 2 main apses - not common in Venice. One overlooks the campo; the other faces the Grand Canal. The architect was Mauro Codussi. The Campanile is a later addition. It dates from 1688 and is in the Baroque style of architecture.

An Austrian bomb went off damaging the church in 1916. Nevertheless, some treasures still remain unharmed. The interior of the Santa Maria Formosa Church features several noteworthy works of art. If you happen to be in a hotel near Santa Maria Formosa in Venice, do drop by. Be sure to see St. Barbara and Saints (1523) by Palma il Vecchio. Recently restored, this work ranks among the greatest pieces in Venetian art. There is also a 16th century Byzantine icon - Santa Maria di Lepanto. It is just inside the main door to the right. Beside the chapel you should also spend time considering the 8th century Egyptian coptic garment. It is said to be the veil of St. Marina.
