The Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale) was once the seat of all power in the city of Venice. It was home to the government. This pink Verona marble palace was also the ruler’s main residence. The 15th century building enjoys a well-earned reputation for embodying history and culture. It is an enormous Gothic complex beside the Basilica San Marco in the Piazza San Marco. Its light and airy combination of marble and Istrian stone arcades broke with tradition in design.
Some of the highlights are the Arco Foscari - a triumphal arch in the courtyard. There is the Giant’s Staircase designed by Antonio Rizzi for ceremonial purposes. You can also visit the Court of the cord (Torture Chambers) and the Compass Room. Spend time admiring the Sala d’Oro with its staircase by Sansorvino and arched lavish decor. In the Great Council Hall there is an entire wall displaying Paradise (1588-1592) by Domenico and Jacopo Tintorreto. This is the world’s largest oil painting. It is impossible to enjoy the beauty and treasures of the Palazzo Ducale in a single day. Give yourself more time.
