This walled island is fondly known as the Island of the Dead. It is where all good Venetians, and bad, come to rest. Here, you can see tiers of stone coffins holding the famous, infamous and regular Venetians. They also lie under monuments. It is a good place to come and read off the names of world-famous authors and artists. It is easy to visit. You simply hop aboard a vaporetto - a water taxi. It is not so easy to find a budget hotel in Venice near the San Michele Island. You will need EasyToBook.com to help you.

You can wander among the graves on the island. They include those of the composer Igor Stravinsky, and American poet and author Ezra Pound. The bodies do not, however, remain here for eternity. After 10-20 years the bones are collected and removed to ossuaries on other islands. You can also visit the Church of San Michele in Isola. It is constructed of Istrian stone. This excellent example of Renaissance architecture dates from 1469. It is the first building in Venice truly exhibiting the Renaissance spirit. The architect was Mauro Codussi. The hexagonal Capella Emiliana (1530) has 3 small altars. The first church made of Istrian stone, it features work by Bernini and his father, Petro Bernini. The Adoration of the Magi is by G. Antonio da Carona.
