Centuries ago, pilgrims sought refuge on the lagoon off of Venice. This small piece of land was Santa Maria delle Grazie Island. The Pilgrims and other travelers were on their way to the Holy Land. Santa Maria della Grazier Island, then known as La Cavana or Cavanell provided them shelter. Eventually, the church decided to build here. First arose a shrine to a miraculous image. This was of the Holy Virgin and came from Constantinople. The island now became Santa Maria delle Grazie Island. You can locate it a short distance away from the San Giorgio Maggiore.

This monastery island of the 15th century holds the remains of a few religious buildings. The Gothic church was destroyed during a revolutionary uprising in 1848. It is now home to an infectious hospital. It has been a military zone under Napoleon and more recently. It is not easy to locate a cheap hotel in Venice near the Santa Maria delle Grazie Island.
