The Accademia Galleries (Gallerie dell’Academia) holds within its walls the largest collection of Venetian art in existence. The basis for this marvellous exhibition is the Accademia di Bele Arti compiled by the painter Giovanni Battista Piazetta in 1750. Napoleon moved the collection to this site in 1807. You will find it within walking distance of many of the convenient cheap hotels in Venice.

The Accademia Galleries is home to work covering a diverse period of art. There are works representative of the Medieval, Byzantine, Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo periods, and the myriad rooms provide you with more than a glimpse of some of the city’s greatest artists. There is The Cycle of St. Ursula (1495-1500) by Vittorio Carpaccio celebrating the life of St. Ursula in 8 paintings. There is also The Tempest (1507) by Giorgione, the Presentation of the Virgin (1530) by Titian and The Stealing of St. Mark (1562) by Jacopi Tintoretto. You must not miss The Apothecary Shop by Pietro Longhi and Bellini’s Procession of the Relic of the Cross. It is worth staying in any hotel in Venice as long as it is near the Accademia Galleries.
