Palace (Palazzo dei Camerlenghi) sits at the lee of the Rialto Bridge. It is opposite the Fondaco dei Tedeschi – the Trading Center. This is an appropriate location for this building. It was once the offices of the Camerlenghi. These 3 men were the city officials responsible for the administration of public funds. They were the treasurers of Venice. The building of marble now houses the Italian Corte dei Conti.
You may not be able to afford to stay in such a palazzo. You can, however, visit the Camerlenghi Palace from nearby hotels in Venice. Note the intricate stone work by the designer Guglielmo dei Grigi (Bergamusco). He constructed the building in 1528. It is a balanced structure wrought in marble. Bergamusco created intricate carvings on the capitals of the central façade. This reflects the influence of Lombard Renaissance. The pentagonal building features large windows and plenty of whimsical decorations on its exterior. Do not be fooled, however. Inside there was a jail for those people who dared to avoid paying their taxes.
