The Dominicans took possession of the site of the Church of il Gesuati in the 17th century. They began construction of the church in 1726. They named it the Chiesa di Santa Maria del Rosario. The locals begged to differ when Giorgio Massari took charge. The architectural style of choice was Palladian, based it on Palladio’s Redentore. The design soon made the Church of il Gesuati a landmark on the Zattere quay side.
The interior is worth a visit. It is classicism and rococo, creating a richly decorated display. Tiepolo is responsible for the 3 frescoes on the ceiling. His works include The Life of St. Dominic (1737-1739) and Virgin with Saints (1740). There are also 2 altar paintings by Sebastian Ricci (1659-1734) and Giambattista Piazetta (1638-1754). You can witness one of the rarer works of art during the holiday season.
