The Church of San Silvestro is a large, plain structure. It resides just across from the Palazzo Velier. It is a Neo-classical edifice rebuilt between 1837 and 1843. The architect was Lorenzo Santi. His work is based on a design by Giovanni Meduna. The church features the clean lines and balance of this architectural style. The building dominates the Campo San Silvestro.

Take your time wandering the square before you enter the church. Within, you will find 2 memorable pieces of art. The primary work St. Thomas of Canterbury with the Baptist and St. Francis is mainly by Girolamo Santa Cruce of the Venetian School. Girolamo only painted St. Thomas in 1520. The extra saints were an addition in the 19th century by Leonardo Gavagnin. There is also The Baptism of Christ by Tintorretto (1518-1594). Worth visiting is the Scuola dei Mercanti di Vino with its upstairs chapel. Part of the church, this chapel features newly restored frescoes.
