The church, nicknamed “I Frari”, has a lavish interior. Santa Maria Gloriosa Frari boasts some of the city’s finest work. It certainly can lay claim to one of the more unique tombs. Canova originally designed a Neo-classical tomb for Titian. It took the shape of a pyramid. When he died, his students copied it for his tomb. This marble structure stands as a monument to Canova as do several other tombs within the confines of this church. You might want to examine the Foscari Monument. It holds the relics of Doge Foscarai (1423-1457). There is also an excellent rood screen from 1475. It was carved by Pietro Lombardo and Bartolomeo Bon. If you have time, be sure to admire the intricately carved bas reliefs of the monk’s choir (1468). The stalls feature scenes of Venetian city life.
