During her lifetime, Peggy Guggenheim played many different roles. One of her most important ones was as an art collector and promoter. In 1949, the American heiress purchased the Palazzo Venier dei Leone. This Palace was known as the Unfinished. It had been intended to cover 4 storys but never did. Yet, its 2 beautiful gardens and existing stories proved the perfect backdrop for Guggenheims’ collection.
The collection contains around 200 paintings and sculptures. All modern periods and movements are present. There is the Cubist work of Braque and Picasso as well as the Futurism art of Balla, Severini and Bocconi. You can admire the Abstract art of Kandinsky or the Modernist approach by Rothko, Pollock, Bacon and Motherwell. There are Metaphysical works and Surrealists. In the gardens you can also admire the sculptures on display. Take the time to enjoy a light meal, snack or beverage. You can even purchase something from the gift shop.
