The polychrome stone paneling has suffered over the years, but the asymmetrical façade of the Scuola Grande di San Marco remains. It still boasts of its fine arcades, trompe l’oeil effects and marble panels. Work began on the Scuola Grande di San Marco in the 15th century. Pietro Lombardo started work on the structure with the help of Giovanni Duora in 1488. Lombardo stayed with the project until his death in 1490. At this point, Mauro Codussi took over. He completed the upper order in 1495.
The Scuola underwent several adjustments over the years. In the 16th century, the wooden carved ceiling was added. The 19th century revamped much of the interior. The purpose of serving the city as a hospital remains. Today, it is the main entrance to the Ospedale Civile. It is one hospital you should visit. Inside the hospital’s chapel, you will find works by many Venetian masters. This Church of San Lazzarode Mendicanti is home to art by Tintoretto and Veronese. If you feel the need to visit the hospital, book a budget hotel near the Scuola Grande di San Marco in Venice. You can attend to health issues and nurture your cultural soul.
