One of the favorite sights in Bardolino is the Eremo di San Giorgio, or the Hermitage of Saint George. It is located in the area known as Monte San Giorgio, a small hill that overlooks Garda Lake, the largest lake in Italy. If you're staying at one of the hotels in Bardolino, ask the front desk for directions to the Hermitage. The area occupied by the hermitage forms the border between the towns of Bardolino and Garda. The Hermitage belongs to the Camaldolese monks, part of the larger Benedictine order. It was founded around the 17th century, most likely around 1663, and is today very well preserved. Surrounding a large central garden you can still see small buildings composed of two rooms, which were the cells used by the monks.

The monastery contains the 17th century Chiesa di San Giorgio, or Church of Saint George, which houses a few impressive works of art, as well as extensive and beautiful grounds. Indeed, there is a wide road, lined by majestic cypress trees, which circles around the hermitage and leads to amazing viewing spots where the entire Garda Lake can be seen, as well as the hills and valleys of the surrounding area, rich in olive groves, vineyards and a number of country villas. The monks allow single men to remain at the hermitage for brief periods of time and partake in the religious activities that characterize life at the complex.
