Briatico is a town in the province of Vibo Valentia, in the Southern Italian region of Calabria. Though it has become quite popular today due to its beautiful beaches and clear water, the town has been through some difficult times. Indeed, a series of earthquakes in the 17th and 18th centuries led to the total destruction of the original town in 1783. You can still see some remains of the original town, in the area called Briatico Antica or Briatico Vecchia; here, you’ll see the remains of a medieval castle and some of the important churches of the old town. Closer to the beaches, you’ll be able to see the remains of two watchtowers that belonged to the old town.

Briatico’s history dates much further back in time than the Middle Ages, though, and you’ll also be able to see archeological remains of a Roman necropolis and remains that date to prehistoric times.
