The area surrounding Asiago witnessed a number of battles between the Austrian and Italian army during World War I. Silent traces of these conflicts have been left throughout the land, especially in an area known as Monte Zebio. The small forts, galleries and trenches excavated and constructed by the troops during these battles have been turned into an open-air museum. The museum, which is essentially a replica of the battlefield, is located at an altitude of about 1700 meters. One piece of trench that was reconstructed has been dedicated to educational purposes, showing what a “typical” trench structure would have looked like during the actual war.

Furthermore, the town of Asiago also renovated an area that served as a military cemetery, where a large number of soldiers from the Sassari Brigade were buried, as well as the area that was once the Italian Division Command. All of these renovated and restructured areas are connected by a marked path around the mountain. The Museo all’Aperto di Monte Zebio is one of a few of its kind in Italy and represents an innovative and efficient way of using World War I military posts both to attract tourists and educate the public.
