Castle Bellaguardia, the Castle of Juliet, and Castello della Villa, the Castle of Romeo. Legend has it that these two towers in Montecchio Maggiore served as inspiration for The Bard’s most famous story, Romeo and Juliet. In 1552, when the stageplay was adapted to a novel by Luigi del Porta of Vicenza, the story was set in the city of Montecchio Maggiore. The castle was built around 975, and may be worth a look for lovers of Shakespeare’s work.
