In the province of Viterbo, the small town of Latera sits upon a hilltop amongst rolling green and yellow hills and fields. The town was first mentioned in documents in the 12th century, and the city is a very well preserved medieval village. The town was ruled from 1408 to 1650 by the Farnese family. The first ruler of this family was Ranuccio Farnese, who received Latera as his dukedom from Pope Gregory XII in 1408.

The town is dominated by the Farnese palace that Ranuccio built, and it is surrounded by the medieval city center. Ask at your EasyToBook.com budget hotel for directions to the Three Fountains, one of which is the 17th century Ducal Fountain (Fontana del Ponte). A more modern contribution to the town is the Museum of Earth, which opened in 1999. The city sits near both Bolsena Lake and Mezzano Lake, both of which make great side trips from the village.
