Visitors to this corner of the region of Hiroshima are likely to be drawn to the staggeringly beautiful UNESCO World Heritage site of the Itsukushima shrine, a Shinto shrine on the picturesque island of Itsukushima. The first shrine buildings were believed to have been erected in the sixth century, but the present shrine has been in its present state since 1168 when funds were provided by the warlord Taira no Kiyomori. The shrine consists of stunning pier-like structures built over the bay, and the island is said to have once commanded holy status.

As well as this beautiful spot, the area also features the Miyajima Natural Botanical Garden, part of the Setonaiki National Park, and like the shrine, it is also a World Heritage site. Around 350,000 specimens exist in the gardens, which also take in the nearby Misen forest. With spectacular natural beauty in abundance along with rich Japanese history, a trip to Hatsukaichi offers something for everyone.
