The Swedish Gate is located in Old City Riga in the country of Latvia. It is one of the most popular and interesting structures in all of Riga. It was originally built as part of the fortification wall that surrounded the entirety of the Old City. The Swedish Gate was built into the wall in 1698. It is actually the only gate in Riga that remains in its original form. However, there is an exit from a church courtyard that remains original as well.

Tourists come to visit the gate and the wall in order to relive a little piece of history as well as to see a great architectural structure. The Swedish Gate has its title because in 1968 when it was built the Old City was under Swedish rule. It is quite amazing that the gate has remained in its original state despite most of the wall being destroyed in the 1800’s. It is a must see for travelers in the Riga area.
