The Freedom Monument is one of the most important monuments and structures in the city of Riga in the country of Latvia. However, it does not refer to the independence that Latvia gained from the Soviet Union in 1991. It was built in 1935 during the first period of independence from 1918 to 1940. The woman at the top referred to fondly as Milda holds three stars which are said to represent the three regions of Latvia.

Tourists who visit the monument are surely to understand the strength of the independence of Latvia for the citizens. Latvia has had a few brief periods of independence from the Soviet Union and therefore to this day there are flowers placed at the bottom to remember these important moments. It is a great way for the tourists in the area to appreciate and gain some understanding of the political history of the country through viewing an incredible sculpture.
