The M.K. Ciurlionis National Museum of Art had its start in 1921, however, it was not opened until 1925 as the M.K. Ciurlionis Gallery. Although it was transferred to a new home in 1936 and was named the Vytautas the Great Museum of Culture, the museum was finally given the name that it has now retained in 1944. This long history has rather helped in establishing the museum into being among the main attractions in Kaunas at present, aside from the wonderful works of arts that it houses. You can find some fine Kaunas accomodations near the museum.
Held in such high esteem as other attractions in the city like the Kaunas Ghetto, the Lithuanian Zoo Park, the Museum of the Devils and the Ninth Fort, the museum is one of the most frequented spots in Kaunas. This, as it houses the works of Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis, who was touted to be the most outstanding composer and artist in Lithuania, it also showcases 15th to early 20th century artworks and a number of folk art pieces of the country. Situated near the major hotels in Kaunas, the museum not only has a number of art galleries, but it also has a Music Room, where one can listen to the recordings of Ciurlionis' live piano concerts as well as his music.
