Otherwise known as the Memel or the Memelburg Castle, this was believed to have been constructed by the Teutonic Knights. As an attraction, it now houses an archaeological site and a museum and it is known to be one of the most frequented spots in the city. The Teutons were the ones who christened the now Klaipeda Castle as the Memelburg or Memel. This, as Klaipeda itself was also known under this name until the year 1923, when the city was taken over by the military forces of Lithuania. Located near the hotels in Klaipeda, the castle was first documented in written sources during the year 1252. Since then, the castle went through a number of events that led to its being destroyed, which also resulted in its restorations and reconstructions over the centuries. It was finally demolished during the 19th century though when it was deemed to have lost its significance strategically. The archaeological works done on the castle's site was started during the 20th century. In the year 2002, a museum was set up below one of the castle's citadels.
