The Great Synagogue of Vilna may have undergone demolition during the years 1955 to 1957, but its memory lives on in three of its original pieces that are now in the Vilna Gaon Jewish Museum near some accomodations in Vilnius. These are a reader's desk, a door of the Holy Ark and a bas-relief that has the Ten Commandments on it. As such, the synagogue still remains to be one of the fascinating Vilnius attractions. Other such attractions include the Hill of the Three Crosses, the Gate of Dawn, the Museum of Genocide Victims and the Presidential Palace. Check with your Vilnius hotel for tours.

Made entirely of stone, the Great Synagogue of Vilna once stood on one end of the Jewish Street in Vilna and could have been easily accessible from the hotels in Vilnius. During High Holy Days before the second World War, the synagogue was filled to the brim with some 5,000 worshipers, even if its main prayer hall can only accommodate 300 people. Partly destroyed during the World War II by the Germans, the synagogue and the schulhof complex that had skirted it underwent complete demolition by the Soviets. Now, all you can see in the site is a basketball court and a kindergarten structure.
