Since it was built midway through the 14th century, the Church of the Holy Mother of God has been through a number of restorations. This is because of the great big fires in 1610, 1716 and 1748 that contributed much to the changes of the church's facade and even its exteriors. It ceased to be a religious structure in 1808, when it was divided into two floors by architect M. Schultz in the year 1810. Then, classrooms, a library and dissection rooms for the anatomy classes of the Vilnius University were constructed in the church. During the year 1842, the church served as a barracks for soldiers. It was also made into a warehouse, an archive and a smithery over the years.
