If there is one museum in Vilnius that you must not fail to visit, then it is the National Museum of Lithuania. Coming here is in essence arriving in many places under one roof, which makes the museum one of the major contributors to the tourism of Vilnius. Begun in 1855 as the Vilnius Museum of Antiquities, this museum did not acquire its national status until the year 1992. This was also done considering that the main collections under the exhibits of the museum portray the national history and statehood of the entire Lithuanian country. Although there are collections of the museum that are scattered all over Vilnius like the Old and the New Arsenals, the main museum itself has six departments that have particular specializations. Among these are the History, Ethnography, Iconography, Archaeology and Numismatics departments, which store over 800,000 items.
