A very visible piece of Macedonia history can be seen with the Kale Fortress. Constructed from remains of Skupi which was demolished in an earthquake sometime in the early 5th century A.D, this fortress is certainly an impressive display of might and power. The Kale Fortress was believed to be constructed some time in the 6th century A.D. under the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. Throughout the centuries the fortress was modified and rebuilt until it finally was demolished by numerous wars and battles.

Today, the Kale Fortress, often times simply referred to as Kale which is Turkish for ‘Fortress’ is a popular destination for visitors to Skopje. What remains is still impressive and inside the walls is a great recreational park. At night, the sounds of traditional folk music and the river Vardar can be heard near the Kale Fortress.
