Macedonia is an ancient country with ruins dating before recorded history. Macedonia and its cities and people have seen many hardships and survived with stronger resolves and determination. In 1963 Macedonia was hit especially hard by an earthquake that read as a 6.3 on the Richter scale. The capital, Skopje was especially hard hit. Skopje was nearly leveled and thousands of people died. The earthquake occurred in the morning hours and the clock at the Old Railway Station still reads 5:17.
The Old Railway Station was a wonderful modernist architectural design symbolizing Skopje embrace of its future. After the earthquake much of the stations was demolished expect for the wall with the large clock. It is a reminder and memorial for all those that lost their lives on that tragic day. Today, the Old Railway Station houses the city museum and is a very popular destination for residents and tourists.
