The Aqueduct Hotels
Just outside of Skopje, in Macedonia is a very visible reminder of the countrys history. An ancient aqueduct stands guard in a farmers field. The aqueduct was a necessary invention that dates to the Roman Era. With the aid of aqueduct areas of land were farmed creating footholds in places that would otherwise provide a harsh life. This particular aqueduct features 55 arches and is made of brick and stone. There is some controversy on when the aqueduct was constructed, either under the Roman rule or the Byzantine Rule. However, the most recent study has shown that the aqueduct dates to the 16th century placing it in the Turkish rule.Visitors to the aqueduct feel transported to another place and time. The tall arches and impressive engineering is set against blue skies and rolling green hills. Great for a day trip and picnic, visitors are able to reach Skopje before evening.
