St. Paul’s Church is not actually a church – it’s a graveyard known to be the former resting place of the renowned Saint, Saint Francis Xavier. He was laid to rest in this cemetery until 1553 where his body was eventually transferred to Goa, India. However, it was converted into a church and it used to be called “Our Lady of the Hill” when the Portuguese built the original church in 1521. The name “St. Paul”, came from the Dutch when they changed the place into a cemetery after they have established a Lutheran Church located below.

The St. Paul Church is now a white washed tower and a gem of Melaka tourism. At the back of the structure is the original structure of the church which is now the gate of the cemetery. There’s also a white washed statue dedicated to the venerable saint. St. Paul Church is still one of the most popular sights of Melaka especially for the pilgrims as they trace the steps of the great saint who lived and died in this place.
