The Melaka General Hospital or Hospital Besar Melaka for the locals was opened to the public in 1934. It still stands today and is one of the biggest hospital facilities in the country. The hospital's total land area is now at 17 hectares and they are still expanding for additional building and facilities. The vast area of the hospital is actually one of the remarkable sights in Melaka. The hospital can be found in the northern part of Melaka which requires you to drive a little bit to get there. However, taxis are well familiar with the hospital so it could be located at anytime.
Aside from serving the sick, part of the vast hospital complex is dedicated to medical education. Aspiring nurses, midwives and doctors from all over the country come here to study. There is also a chest clinic in this hospital that is in charge of tuberculosis cases in Melaka. Along with the general Melaka tourism, medical tourism is slowly pushed by the government and the Melaka General Hospital is at the forefront of attracting tourists to Melaka.
