At first Glance, A Famosa which translates to “Famous” is just another old gate. But you’ll soon notice its importance to the people and history as more tourists come here and take pictures. A Famosa used to be a fort which was built in 1511 but it was eventually flattened out in 1808 when the government found it to be unnecessary. What’s left are the gate and the cannon which could have been destroyed if not for the intervention of Sir Stamford Raffles who is also known as the founder of modern Singapore.
The gate is properly called the Porta de Santiago which is also the name of the Fort before it became A Famosa. Entrance is absolutely free as you can see it from afar. You may need to hike a little bit as this landmark is located on top of the hill. The landmark is also close to known tourist landmarks such as the Stadhuys and the Melaka Sultanate Palace. Melaka tourism has always emphasized this as one of the most important sights of Melaka because of its historical significance.
