During the height of the Chinese-Malaccan relations, Sultan Mansur Shah married Hang Li Poh, a Chinese princess. This was during the 15th century and everything went well between these two nations. Hang Li-Po's Well is named after the Chinese princess as she commissioned the construction of the well. Legend has it that even during the driest of all season; the well was still full of water, making it the sole source of water in the whole of Melaka.
By the 17th century, the well was recognized for its historical and legendary importance to the people that the Dutch eventually protected it. They built a wall around this well to protect it from invaders which could destroy the well. Today, it’s one of the major tourist Melaka attractions because of this legend. It’s now a popular wishing well for tourists and locals who want to go back to Melaka. Visiting this wishing well is one of the most interesting things to do in Melaka.
