The present church was opened to the public in 1861 and with minor revisions; the church still stands as it is today. The church was built by Eurasians who fled Thailand because of religious persecution during the 18th century. Because of its religious role in Penang, it was given the status of the cathedral in 1955.
The church can actually hold at least 1,200 worshippers at the same time. However, because of the construction of other churches in the island, there are only few parishioners left that are dedicated to this church. On the other hand, that doesn’t mean the church is left to rot. On the contrary Penang tourism has developed this church to be one of the top Penang attractions. It is perfectly preserved just like it was built in 1860. The latest changes that were applied to this fascinating church were in 1928 where two wings were attached to the structure. The church has a simple design but its historical significance makes this cathedral popular with tourists.
